Beginner Hiking Program (BHP) for Families, AMC Boston Family Outings, Spring 2019

Have you ever wanted to take your family for a hike? Not sure where to go, what to bring, or how to convince your kids it will be fun? Then join us for the 2nd Annual Beginner Hiking Program (BHP) for Families (you do not need to be an AMC member)! BHP registrants will receive periodic emails with information on appropriate clothing and equipment, trail etiquette, basic trail safety, and tricks and games to use on the trail. After you register, choose from the list of hikes especially for beginners and sign up early, as hikes will fill quickly.

Family Walk to Tippling Rock, Sudbury, MA

Join Boston Family & Outdoors.Rx Walk to Tippling Rock in Sudbury, MA with great views of Boston, the Blue Hills, Mt. Wachusett and the Western Suburbs. We will walk through forest, past ponds.

This gentle walk is open for families of all ages. We will walk a total of 2 miles. No registration is required. The hike is free. Members and non-members welcome.

Please bring a water bottle and a hat. Bring sun screen and insect repellent. Come wearing footwear good for a moderate up and down walk, either sneakers or hiking boots. The hike will cancel for rain.

Cardigan High Cabin Spring Break Weekend Overnight, Alexandrea, NH

Join a small group of AMC Families at Cardigan High Cabin for the night. Hike in two miles with 1450' elevation gain. The cabin is just under half a mile from the summit of Mt. Cardigan (3,155') w/great views. Spring hiking is awesome with cool temperatures and no bugs.

Begin at Cardigan Lodge and hike 2 miles (1,450 elevation gain) to Cardigan High Cabin. Drop overnight gear and continue to the summit. Return to the cabin for games/activities and meal prep. The cabin has a composting toilet and wood stove for heat. Sunday hike back to Cardigan Lodge.

Family Hike at Wachusett Mtn, Princeton, MA (BHP, Level 2)

Join other families for a leisurely hike to the summit of Wachusett Mountain in Princeton, MA! The hike will be approximately 3 miles with roughly 800ft elevation gain. On a clear day, the 360-degree views from the summit and summit tower are lovely! Often known as a downhill ski destination, Wachusett Mtn is located within the 3000-acre Wachusett State Reservation, home to 17 miles of hiking and walking trails (we will only cover about 3 miles, though!). Pack a lunch and join us for a beautiful spring hike!

Blue Hills Ponkapaog Pond Loop Family Hike (BHP: Level 2)

Join AMC Boston Family Outings for a moderate, 4-mile hike around Ponkapoag Pond in the DCR Blue Hills Reservation. This is flat terrain with minimal elevation gain, and suitable for most school aged kids. We will begin near the golf course and plan 2+hours for the loop. Highlights include the Atlantic White Cedar swamp and the rustic AMC campground area, plus hopefully some fun wildlife sightings.
This hike is recommended for ages 5+ due to mileage. Under 5 kids only with prior permission from leader.

Kids Intro to Fishing trip, Medfield, MA

Family Kids Learn to Fish class. Come join us 8 am - 11 am as we teach kids ages 6 and up to learn the basics about bait fishing. We cover topics such as reading water, bait, lures, bobbers. We meet at Rocky Woods in Medfield, MA by 8am Sunday May 5th. You don't need a fishing license.

Since we have a limited number of rods, we will restrict this to 10 kids plus parent(s). Remember to bring water, snacks and/or lunch.

Family Birding Walk at Oxbow National Wildlife Refuge, Harvard, MA (BHP: Level 1)

Join us for a morning easy, slow-paced walk, looking for birds, especially warblers, and learning about nature along the way. The hike will last approximately 1.5-2 hours and will cover between 1-2 miles. The beautiful trail follows the Nashua River. At times it can be a little muddy, but there is usually a way around the puddles. Registration is required.

Mothers' Day Family Walk at Great Brook Farm, Carlisle, MA (BHP, Level 1)

Family Outings Bag Some Presidential 4,000 Footers with Stay at Mizpah Spring Hut

Come join us on a 2 day family hike with a stay at Mizpah Spring Hut in Crawford Notch, NH. We will stay at the lovely hut during its self-service season and bag 2 or 3 4,000 footers in the White Mountains. The main route will go over Pierce and Jackson, which are two four-thousand footers with great views, but on the easier side for four-thousand footers. There might also be a chance to go summit Eisenhower depending on the conditions and the pace of the group. All 3 of these summits have stunning views of Mt. Washington, the presidentials and far beyond on a clear day.

Blue Hills: Family Hike to Great Blue Hill, Milton, MA (BHP: LEVEL 2)

Join AMC Boston Family Outings for a moderate family hike beginning at the Mass Audubon Blue Hills Trailside Museum. The two mile loop trail will follow the green dot trail to North Skyline and return via the red dot trail, for an elevation gain of 635 feet. Highlights include the stone Elliot Tower, the weather observatory, and the summit of Great Blue Hill, which is the highest point in the Blue Hills. The Trailside Museum could also be a great pre- or post-hike activity, with indoor and outdoor animal exhibits. This hike is appropriate for school-aged children, ages 5-12+

Family AMC Lonesome Lake Hut Memorial Day Weekend, Franconia Notch, NH

Are you and your family ready for the fun and adventure of staying overnight at an AMC hut and summiting a New Hampshire 4000 footer? Spend two nights at the family-friendly Lonesome Lake hut, one of the most accessible in the Whites, and summit North Kindsman on the second day. On Saturday we will hike 1.6 miles (and gain 1000' vertical feet) to the hut at a kid friendly pace. The route crosses 2 bridges and features a few mild rock scrambles, and the incline is moderated by switchbacks. Along the way, we will stop for snacks, look at nature and enjoy the views.

Family Overnight Backpack to AMC Zealand Falls Hut, White Mtns, NH

Join us for a night at Zealand Hut, one of AMC's easiest huts to access. The hut, with co-ed bunkrooms, is spectacularly situated on the side of Zealand Valley near Zealand Falls at the northern end of the Pemigewasset wilderness. We will hike in via the Zealand trail which is 2.8 miles and 650 ft. gain. Carry your sleeping bag, lunches and snacks, water and gear. The group will carry in supplies for dinner and breakfast and prepare it together in the hut kitchen. This trip is appropriate for children > 4 years with adults who can hike 2.8 miles on a relatively flat trail.

Discover our local history through stories of days gone by. Imagine 1642. The Nashaway Algonquin Indians invite you to settle here along the Nashua …... Options for shorter (~ 1 hr) or longer walk (~ 3 - 3.5 hrs) of your choice. The longer walk is a relatively easy 5.5 mile hike much of which is along the Nashua River. Dress for the weather and bring a rain jacket, water, and snacks and/or lunch.

Family Walk at Noanet Woodlands, Dover, MA

We will walk the popular Caryl Trail to an old mill site. Along the way, we will use magnifying glasses to see what lives under fallen logs and along the forest floor. Blue Hills: Family Skyline Loop Hike, Milton, MA (BHP LEVEL 3)

Join AMC Boston Families on a BHP level 3 hike of approximately 3 miles. We will depart the Houghton Pond area on the red dot trail to Buck Hill, then return via the North Skyline trail. Red dot hikes in the Blue Hills cover rugged, hilly terrain providing a more challenging hike. This hike is appropriate for school-aged children ages 7-12+, preferably with some recent hiking experience. The Houghton Pond recreation area is a possible post-hike family activity with a playground, concession stand, swimming and picnic area.

Franconia Ridge Family Hike, Franconia Notch, NH (BHP Level 4)

Enjoy this classic hike across one of the most beautiful ridges in the White Mountains. Ascend the Falling Waters trail to Little Haystack, traverse the Franconia Ridge going over Mt.Lincoln to Mt.Lafayette, then down via The Old Bridle Path. 8.9 miles, and over 4,000 feet of total elevation gain. This is a strenuous hike, best for kids age 9 and up, but a classic and beautiful and we know some of you and your kids can do it. Registration required. We will help you assess if you and your kids are ready for this spectacular adventure. This will be a long, but very beautiful special day.

Jeanne also leads for AMC Adventure Travel, having led to Switzerland, Peru (Machu Picchu), and Morocco and has trips coming up to New Zealand and Fiji/Tonga.

Brian is a seasoned hiker and backpacker. His interests are fitness and nature, with a strong fondness for urban parks and anything involving the Olmsteads..thats right ..it was a family business. Brian enjoys leading urban walking trips as well as 4 season trips for families in Boston and new Hampshire. Both backpacks as well as hikes are interesting and fun for children and their families. Within the last year, he has been involved with shelter, hut and all season experiences in the whites.
