Rock climbing provides the exhilaration of conquering a crag, but also the puzzle of figuring out a sequence of moves to climb a difficult section of rock. You can experience the rewards and challenges of outdoor rock climbing by taking the Boston Mountaineering Committee's Rock Climbing Program!
This program covers the basic skills for outdoor rock climbing. The emphasis of the course is learning to safely follow a leader on multipitch trad climbs as well as setting up your own topropes to climb independently. We cover: toprope anchor building, belaying, rappelling, contingency skills, and more.
No prior climbing experience (indoor or outdoor) is necessary. You will learn from our experienced volunteer instructors and meet other aspiring and enthusiastic rock climbers that you can partner with on future adventures!
Indoor program events are held in various locations around the Boston metro area, including the AMC headquarters in Charlestown. The outdoor program weekends are held at Quincy Quarries, rain or shine.
We encourage anyone interested to join our optional information session on March 3 from 7-8pm.
The program starts indoors with Knots Night (mandatory) on March 24 from 7-9pm and New Belayers Night (optional) on March 31 for anyone who isn't comfortable tying in to a harness and belaying a toprope.
The first outdoor program weekend is April 4 and 5 (both days required); you may attend either day of the remaining program weekends: April 18 or 19, April 25 or 26, and May 2 or 3. The program also includes optional social opportunities: the indoor Student Social on April 9, Open Climb day on April 11, Crow Hill BBQ on May 9, and a Boston Chapter Mountaineering Gym Night during the program.
Following the program, our graduates are invited to the annual New Seconds weekend in the Gunks (a world-class climbing destination in New York) where they will be paired up with an experienced leader to do some real multi-pitch climbs.
If you do not have a climbing harness or helmet (required), they may be borrowed at no cost (with a deposit).
Registration is by application, due by the Sunday after the optional information session.
Financial assistance is available.
